TRS chief Chandrasekhar Rao quits after by-poll debacle

Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) founder president K Chandrasekhar Rao resigned on Tuesday owning moral responsibility for his party's debacle in the recent by-elections in Andra Pradesh.

He sent his resignation letter to the TRS General Secretary T Madhusudhanchary.

Just last week the TRS received a big blow after the party fared poorly in the by-elections.

The party, which wants separate statehood for Telangana region, could retain only two of its four Lok Sabha and seven of the 16 Assembly seats in Andhra Pradesh, in the by-elections results declared on Sunday.

The by-elections were held after Rao along with all his Members of Parliament and Members of Legislative Assembly had quit demanding a separate Telangana state and the by-polls were seen as a referendum for the demand.

Rao himself managed to retain Karimnagar Lok Sabha constituency by a relatively thin margin on just over 15,000 votes in by-elections, which were held on May 29.
